Butterflies

We visited Science North last week with our grandkids.  Science North has a Butterflyarium.  What a neat place to experience some of our most delicate and colourful creatures.

Feeding time…

The most harmless of living things and most beautiful!

Overoptimistic!

Recent hopes for the arrival of spring were dashed this morning:

So much for my vow not to shovel snow until next winter!

Moffat’s Path Spring Morning

About a week ago it rained all night and got warm in the morning.  Very humid but cold near the ground.

The fog made it interesting.

This was made using three exposures (-1,0,+1) and then combining them using the HDR function in CS5 Photoshop.

Take Heart!

Despite today’s rotten weather, this is coming…

I guess we can all relax now!

Spring Lies

This was the situation the other day at the end of One Mile Bay.

What I would like to be open water near the shore is still refrozen from last night and it’s nearly noon!

Also there is snow in tomorrow’s forecast.

Nothing to do but wait, I guess…

Back Alley

One of the few alleyways in our town.  It is a well travelled place to get from the parking garage to the Main Street.  Many people walk it regularly but don’t seem to notice the interesting bits of art that they pass.

We take so much for granted in our environment that we have learned not to notice.

The Ice is Retreating

The sun’s subtle strength is working on the ice along our shore…

Facing South doesn’t hurt either.

Waiting for The Chief

Our local cruise boat, The Chief Commanda spends the summer rubbing up against the tires when not navigating the lake carrying tourists and other sightseers.

She won’t launch from her winter berth in Callander for another month, well after the ice is gone.  Her appearance will signal the start of the summer season.

…On The Dock of The Bay…

Not quite as relaxing as the song.  But pretty nice anyway…

Waiting

This is the time of year that seems to pass slowly as the ground thaws and the ice melts.  The explosion of life that will happen in a couple of weeks is imminent but for now, waiting is the only thing to do.

Here is a photograph taken while passing time on the docks…

Yes, the ice is still there.

Not Quite Spring

The remnants of winter are evident above and below this power dam.  This small dam near Powassan has been in place for many years and supplies electricity to the grid.

Every little bit of power helps, I suppose.

Maple Syrup Time!

A friend has a Maple Syrup operation near here.  I visited the other day to see it.  There are 1500 trees tapped and the sap is delivered by pipelines to the evaporator building.

It is a long way from the traditional way of collecting sap to make Maple Syrup.

But the syrup tastes just as good!

Temperatures have been low enough lately that the sap won’t flow for at least another week.  But we are ready!

Bus Shelter

When the weather is cold and it takes forever for the school bus to come, a little shelter is welcome.

Today it’s nicer to stand outside and wait.

I had a very pleasant conversation with the lady of the house.  Turns out that she and her kids built it without male supervision.  It’s a bit crooked and it needs some painting again but it has stood for four years and there are quite a few more left in it.  Without doubt, it is a very cheery sight at the end of the day when the kids get off the bus.
