February Delicate

Around here, February can produce some of the most beautiful scenes of the year.

Like this one:

Delicate is the word for the painting that Mother Nature does.

A bit of winter calm before spring arrives.

Sheltered

Not far from the location of yesterday’s post is this little valley, sheltered from the wind.

Conditions here are much more hospitable for resting the winter away.

Reeds and Cloud

Today is the shortest day of the year, or if you wish, the longest night.

Darkness abounds.

Tomorrow we begin climbing back up the year into light.

Monochrome

King’s Landing is an interesting place to make photographs of Lake Nipissing.

The moods of the Lake and clouds are emphasized by black and white.  Colour reduces the impact somewhat.

Tower

This reminded me of “The Great Escape” and “The Wooden Horse”.

Or “The Spy Who Came In From The Cold”… or a future walk along the border.

Perhaps this version is a bit more ominous, more in keeping with the theme of the movies:

If you were there, you saw the first version.

Your memories may well be closer to the second.

Waterfront Nostalgia

An afternoon on the North Bay Waterfront.

Photographs from the past often show a nostalgic time.  Partly it’s the style of the photograph and the fact that they are often monochrome, but very often the yellowing of age that photos aquire as time passes is the main carrier of the nostalgic feeling.  Fifty years from now these pictures which were made three days or so ago, might be interpreted in the same way by those viewing them.

“Ah, the good ‘ol days.”, could be one of the thoughts going through their minds.

Pine Grove

This grove of pines is found on the walking trails at Laurentian Ski Club.

The grove offers a place of quiet meditation in the midst of a busy city.

Early Settlers?

This trappers cabin is near our place.  The roof is long gone but when it was built it was quite cozy and functional inside.  The friend who owns the land built it in 1972 with the aid of a French Canadian wood carver of his acquaintance as an exercise in woodcraft.  It served his children as a memory maker and fun place to be.

I have visited many times over the past years as it has slowly been deteriorating.  A couple of years ago the top half of a hemlock tree fell on it and contributed to its derelict appearance.

It will be some time before it’s all on the ground but Mother Nature doesn’t own a watch.

Maples

These maples appear to have lived a full life.

Like the buildings in the distance.

Ice Out

The ice is going out of our lake after a long winter.  Last night the effects of warmer temperatures and sunshine along with some rain became evident as the frozen solid skin on the lake broke down.

A light wind moved pans of ice by our place and the tinkling buzz of the pans rubbing gently against each other was gentle music.

The last gasp of winter produces beautiful long crystals of ice that are unique.

Beautiful stuff goes on all the time in the real world.  If you blink you miss it…

King’s Landing

What was called “Government Dock” was rechristened “King’s Landing” a few years ago.  The wharf and rock protect the anchorage from the wind and waves.

Yesterday morning was exceptionally calm.

Red Pines In Black and White

Walked in the Black Forest yesterday.  It is a small area beside the North highway and often forgotten.  It was reforested some time ago with red and white pines.

A new lens (17-40 zoom) allows a different perspective from what I have been using up to now.  Colours are muted at this time of year so this one looks a bit better in black and white.
