Sensuous

The surface of the snow has a very sensuous appearance.

Sensuous

I love the smooth elegance of the transitions.

These will turn into flowers very soon.

1820’s Portage

Imagine voyageurs padding along this path in early spring on the way to Lake Superior.

This is part of the Lavase Portages  which saw such traffic for 150 years.

Opening Canada to commerce one (large) canoe at a time.

They’re Baaack!

Snowmobiles are once again leaving tracks on Four Mile Bay.  The ice is safe enough here for the machines to run around.

The snow acts as an insulator and makes ice growth slower even though the temperature was -27C this morning.

I don’t intend to go walking anywhere on the lake for at least another two weeks.  Give it time to thicken up.  Like, a foot and a half of ice would make me feel pretty confident.

Volcanic Origins

Hawaii was formed as the Pacific Plate slid over a hotspot in the earth’s mantle.  The Big Island is the most recent of the islands to form and is still volcanically active.

Awesome desolation surrounds the crater of the most recently active lava pit, Halema’uma’u Crater.

The plume is composed of steam and sulphur dioxide, which when the wind blows the wrong way requires evacuation from the area as air quality gets very bad indeed.

One feels very small in the presence of this kind of power.

Looking Forward

Now that winter has officially started – there is snow on the ground that has stayed for three days – it’s time to look forward to spring for a moment.  Just to keep in mind that although there is lots of winter joy to be had, there is spring colour waiting as well.
