Gray Weekend

A stalled low pressure system has given us a rainy cool weekend.

No worries mate.  The rainclouds make for some great monochrome opportunities.

Lake Nipissing is the canvas:

And you only need to bring one brush!

I could have stayed inside and watched the ball game!

Glad I didn’t.

North Bay Harbour

The development of the North Bay Waterfront required the construction of a sheltered harbour for small craft.  Rock that had been excavated when the NORAD underground site was built was moved from near Trout lake to the waterfront and dumped into Lake Nipissing to form the breakwall in the photograph.

The small boat marina has spaces for 250 craft.

Nipissing History

The old Chief Commanda served as a cruise boat on Lake Nipissing for many years.  It is now dry-docked on the waterfront and serves as a restaurant and fresh pickerel market.

It was replaced by the “New Chief” in about 1974.

Promise of Summer

Even though the ice is still on Lake Nipissing, it’s easy to imagine paddling your feet in the sand in the warm waters of summer.

I can imagine the little kids splashing in the water.

When summer comes, this is very, very good!

Lake Nipissing Ice

The ice in Nipissing is being blown around by the wind.

Sunset point has collected some of the shards of the winter’s ice.

Ice Panes

Looking like panes of broken glass, the thin ice that formed overnight was piled on the shore by this morning’s wind action.

Very delicate.

Ice Shack Humour?

In spring the ice huts come off the lake.  This is a particularly well constructed example.

A closer view:

I guess you have to go ’round the back?

I shot an arrow into the air…

It fell to earth…

Where?

I don’t know.

Ice Follies Returns

Ice Follies is back on Lake Nipissing.  Two years ago I wrote THIS .  Smaller this year but enjoyable none-the-less.

I spent an enjoyable time on the ice today making photos of the constructions.

Looks like a building from a distance.

Isn’t.
