Spring Morning

This morning was marvellous.  Sun, no wind, not cold.

It rained last Thursday and Friday turning the snow on the ice to slush which then froze on Saturday.  The lake is now skateable for the most part.

An intrepid snowmobile driver tried the slush late Friday afternoon.  Snowmobiles and slush do not go well together.  The track has since frozen.  He had a very tough time going anywhere, but he succeeded.  His machine is not frozen into the lake anywhere near here.

In today’s wired world, simple pleasures are still evident.

Leaving one’s mark, I suppose.

Winter’s Back!

The ice is solid and very smooth after it got flooded by the warm weather.

The bit of snow is the icing on the cake.

Wet Start

We’re off to a wet start for 2011!

Warm temperatures and rain for the past 24 hours have knocked the heck out of the snow and flooded the ice on the lake.  It may be good skating when it freezes later tonight.

Looking to the south across our lake shows the extent of the despair.

Or the possibilities for tomorrow…

Mother Nature does what she pleases!

Winter Lake

Looking east down our lake.

The ice is getting more and more solid.

Soon we will see snowmobile tracks.  When that happens it will be safe to walk out some distance.

Until then, we wait.

One Mile Bay has been frozen for about a week now.  We’ve also had some snow.

It will be this way until April.

First Ice

The water in One Mile Bay is close to freezing.

Another few days of open water.

And then the ice won’t leave until mid-April.

Spring Ice Fishing

Friends were out on our lake a couple of days ago doing some ice fishing.

There is three feet of ice to keep the truck from going to the bottom.  It is a 1971 Fargo by the way.

On a day like this no-one cares if fish are caught or not.  It’s just great to be out on the ice.

Ice Follies

On the ice of Lake Nipissing is an intriguing exhibition of structures and installation art.  Several interesting pieces stand in the sun, wind, snow, cold, dark, to provide messages and analyses of our world.

Tales of the Tracks

On the lake in front of our place there is a good deal of traffic.  Each track can be used to make a bit of a story.

Tale of the Tracks

Or used to do some detective work.
