The Spirit of Haida Gwaii

In Canada’s Museum of Civilization is a plaster model of The Spirit of Haida Gwaii sculpted by Bill Reid.

It is a phenomenally impressive example of native West Coast Art.

Some detail photographs:

All in all a marvellous experience seeing it again.

Flowers and Foundations

But for the persistent efforts of ordinary citizens in North Bay these flowers would be replaced with the foundations of houses.

This butterfly is happy about this:

So is this one:

This lupine doesn’t mind either:

Sometimes the good guys win!

Gray Weekend

A stalled low pressure system has given us a rainy cool weekend.

No worries mate.  The rainclouds make for some great monochrome opportunities.

Lake Nipissing is the canvas:

And you only need to bring one brush!

I could have stayed inside and watched the ball game!

Glad I didn’t.

Different Behaviour

I watched this little wood duck squire his mallard lady love for some time.  She seemed flattered by his attentions.

It was clear that she preferred his company even though mallard gentlemen were readily available.

Perhaps it was something in the water?  Or her vision was faulty.

“Green head – check; gray sides – check; brown chest – check; handsome too.  Yep he’ll do!”?

Quiet Morning

The Erie Canal in Pittsford has evolved over the years from a working canal to leisure.

A quiet morning early in summer finds preparations for a voyage underway, along with people relaxing.

The Building!

The building that was the genesis of the “Rusty” Series:

It now sits somewhat forelornly on the side of the Erie Canal.  Perhaps demolition is its only future.

Sad to think that at one time it was a major contributor to the life and economy of Pittsford.
