Eyes On North Bay

Since 1904 these eyes have observed the life of the city of North Bay from high atop the steeple of St. Andrew’s United Church.

St. Andrews Steeple Openings

The inevitable deterioration wrought by the elements has weakened the top portion of the structure and it will disappear within the week

These elegant shapes will be gone forever.

Only their memory will exist.

They served their purpose well.

I found the white accents of this wall to be interesting.

Brick Wall

Old houses in North Bay were built with red brick.

Rectangles

As time caught up with them, changes were made to accommodate newer lifestyles and other requirements.  Some of the original features of the house are still evident in this photograph. The bricked in window and the re-bricked door are two. The external wires for cable TV and telephone, and the modern electrical conduit on the outside of the house all speak to changing lifestyle needs. The external fire escape tells of the change from what was most likely a single family home to a multiple-unit boarding/apartment house.

Life goes on…

Semi-Detached

One of four identical houses built side by side in 1914 according to a neighbour.

Still in pretty good shape after 98 years.

Brick & Stucco

The wall between the last two postings is itself quite interesting.  The image is composed almost entirely of rectangles.  Hardly a curve in sight.

Different processing “tricks” have been used for each of the three shots of the old Belmont Hotel building.  The colour enhancement necessary to give some life to the “out of camera” photos was achieved in three slightly different ways.  It’s fun to experiment.  (Thanks to Silverpixel for an idea that I modified a bit to give the colour enhancement for this image.)

This substantial brick house was built in 1910.

A very unique design.

Still looks good today!

Red Brick

I grew up with red brick houses.

Had I been born on the Prairies, I suppose I would not have had the exposure to the warmth and regular patterns of brick walls.  Brick is rare out there.

New home construction these days uses almost no brick, opting instead for other materials.  The brick facade (front wall brick, the rest siding) seen on some houses is the ultimate in fraudulent design.

Is brick laying a dying art?
