Construction

Sturdy houses and larger buildings are built using blocks which are made with clay soil which is readily available and cheap. A simple wood form is filled with mud mixed with straw. The block is left to dry in the sun until it is hard enough to be used for building.

It doesn’t snow here (even though the altitude is above 12000 ft) so snow loads are not a factor in roof construction. Houses are finished in stages as money for things like doors and glass for windows becomes available. Initially the roof is thatch but the sign of prosperity is a house with a tile roof. The brown of the mud is the standard colour and during an election campaign, Political Parties will paint the outside of your house for free to advertise their candidate. Less drab that way.

The new residence at Canadore College will not be this colourful when it is finished but these days it sure can be seen from a long way off.

For Coffee Break??

Very comfortable place to have coffee on the job?

Or perhaps it’s for the foreman.

Red Brick

I grew up with red brick houses.

Had I been born on the Prairies, I suppose I would not have had the exposure to the warmth and regular patterns of brick walls.  Brick is rare out there.

New home construction these days uses almost no brick, opting instead for other materials.  The brick facade (front wall brick, the rest siding) seen on some houses is the ultimate in fraudulent design.

Is brick laying a dying art?

Construction

When it’s warm all the time construction requirements differ markedly from my part of the world.

This is a section of an intererior wall of this house.

Note the lack of insulation.

Of course, ventillation is always good!

Colour In My Town

I made a bit of a walk this morning in the downtown area of my town.   There is lots of colour to be seen.

Which is rather nice after the monochrome winter season.
