These photos were made at Rancho El Manzanillo on Santa Cruz Island. This is a “farm/preserve” where these lovely animals are free to roam the property and visitors can see them up close. I worked hard resisting the urge to say, “E.T. Call Home!” No touching, riding or sudden moves are the basic rules. This is their home.

The sheer size and gentle nature of these animals makes our historical treatment of them a very sad tale of human activity and greed.
